Background of the study
Library training programs have become an integral part of professional development for academic staff, particularly lecturers, whose research output significantly influences academic reputation and institutional ranking. In Makurdi, Benue State, academic libraries offer training sessions that enhance lecturers’ competencies in information retrieval, digital resource management, and research methodologies (Umeh, 2023). These training programs are designed to equip lecturers with the skills needed to navigate complex digital databases, utilize reference management tools, and adopt innovative research practices. The increased focus on library training has been linked to a rise in research publications, collaborative research initiatives, and improved quality of academic work (Bello, 2024). Despite these promising developments, challenges such as infrequent training sessions, outdated training modules, and low participation rates among lecturers may limit the full potential of these programs. This study evaluates the impact of library training on lecturers’ research outputs by examining the relationship between training attendance and subsequent research productivity. It also investigates the perceived benefits and shortcomings of current training programs, aiming to recommend improvements that align with the evolving needs of academic staff in a digital age (Chukwu, 2023).
Statement of the problem
Although library training is available in Makurdi, there is insufficient evidence on its direct impact on the research output of lecturers. Many lecturers report challenges including limited access to updated training materials, infrequent sessions, and inadequate follow-up support. This has resulted in variable research productivity and a gap between training objectives and outcomes. The study seeks to explore these issues and determine the extent to which library training contributes to enhanced research performance (Ibrahim, 2024).
Objectives of the study
To assess the impact of library training on lecturers’ research productivity.
To identify challenges affecting the effectiveness of library training programs.
To propose recommendations for improving library training initiatives.
